You may wonder why cow hide prices vary so much online. It's partly due to marketing but mostly due to the quality and size of the hide. The best quality hides are quite heavy, thick, clean (unmarked/cut) and fold without resistance. This means they lie flat on the floor or drap/hang with 'weight'. The hides will be 'clean' which is to say that the hide is relatively blemish free. Cows hides are important by-products of the meat industry. Most hides are chrome tanned these days which leaves the back a light blue/grey colour. Brazilian hides can be excellent and Argentinian hides are generally good quality and little cheaper.  Being Brazilian or Argentine doesn't guarantee quality though. Our Brazilian source sends only the best - she only sends 1 in 20 of the hides she gets on to us. Recent high demand means it's essential to rely on a trusted supplier because there are many sub-standard hides being traded. We only take hides when good ones are available. There are even cheaper hides from elsewhere (Middle East and South Asia) but they can be poorly cut and tanned. The hides are usually short to medium haired but can be sometimes be long. Ours our all beautiful and have names.
